Thrift Store

Under the very capable direction of Jacquie Vesterinen, the SMAC Thrift Store is a veritable gold mine for bargains. Generous donations from neighbours and friends have allowed SMAC to offer a wide selection of clean clothing and footwear for men, women, children and infants with household goods, furniture and sports equipment in a second room. The thrift store offers weekly specials and semi-annual Half Price Blowout Sales.

SMAC offers computer and internet access as well as lessons.

Computer Lab

This area of SMAC, located at the north end of Room 3, holds two computer shelves equipped with computers of various styles and capabilities. The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (see link on SMAC's homepage) granted funding for three E Machines. Thanks to the advocacy of the Tatlayoko Think Tank (see link on SMAC's homepage), we secured federal funding for the purchase of three internet-ready Dell Computers, internet access - currently dial-up, soon to be broadband wireless - and a Community Access Program Youth Intern who created this website and is available for help with computer applications and internet issues.

There are several thousand books available to borrow in the library, and membership to the library is free. There is also a collection of movies available to rent in the library.

Library

Librarian, Rose Raphael, along with many helpers who have cheerfully donated hours and hours of time, has processed in excess of 16,000 books to create a library filled with fantasies, murder-mysteries, romances, science-fiction, spies, westerns, wars and non-fiction titles in every Dewey Decimal category. Children of all ages can lose themselves in the books from our library. Library card registration is free, with no late fees charged on books or videos. A drop-off box is located on the front porch. When 70 Mile Elementary School closed, School District 27 offered the use of its books for our visitors. In time, the quality and quantity of books donated to SMAC presented us with a delicious dilemma - too many books for the shelves! Arrangements were made to transfer SD27-owned books to area schools.

SMAC has a variety of indoor games available.

Games Room

Are there too many mosquitoes … too much snow … too little snow … is it too hot to play outside? Ping-pong, shuffleboard, billiards, board games and a television with VCR offers respite from pesky critters and weather conditions. Comfy couches complete the room.

Gymnasium

The gym is stocked with volleyball nets and balls, basketball hoops and balls, floor hockey sticks, pucks and nets. Guests can play with tumbling mats, skipping ropes and balls of all sizes and shapes … and are encouraged to bring the whole family to enjoy heart-healthy activities. The gym is available for large meetings, workshops and banquets.

An out door basket ball court and large playing field are available as well as the gym. The Big Toy, located at the Seventy Mile Access Centre.

The Great Outdoors

How many hotdog and bake sales does it take to build a special playground feature? Dedicated residents of 70 Mile House worked for many years to raise funds for the Big Toy located in the play area to the east of the buildings. With financial help from the Ketchum family of Williams Lake, it was completed in the late 1990's. When the school closed, the Big Toy remained while School District 27 owned equipment was moved to area elementary schools. Cross-country ski trails, located at the north end of the property, offer a venue for wintertime fun.
